The End and The Start
T.S. Eliot's poem "Four Quartets"
What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make and end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from. And every phrase
And sentence that is right (where every word is at home,
Taking its place to support the others,
The word neither diffident nor ostentatious,
An easy commerce of the old and the new,
The common word exact without vulgarity,
The formal word precise but not pedantic,
The complete consort dancing together
Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning,
Every poem an epitaph. And any action
Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea's throat
Or to an illegible stone: and that is where we start.
We die with the dying:
See, they depart, and we go with them.
We are born with the dead:
See, they return, and bring us with them.
The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree
Are of equal duration. A people without history
Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern
Of timeless moments. So, while the light fails
On a winter's afternoon, in a secluded chapel
History is now and England.
And to make and end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from. And every phrase
And sentence that is right (where every word is at home,
Taking its place to support the others,
The word neither diffident nor ostentatious,
An easy commerce of the old and the new,

With the drawing of this Love and the voice of this Calling
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.
Quick now, here, now, always—
A condition of complete simplicity
(Costing not less than everything)
And all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well
When the tongues of flames are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;

Inspiration - c o n c e p t u a l f i l m s
the power of a few white lines - i should really be getting to bed... late nights/early mornings were meant to have ceased after the completion of university... but it seems that ones brain does not stop wanting to see the outer world become more like it's inner world when it is no longer framed within a university course... a new framework it requires - reality or fiction - one must choose... constrained but transforming or freedom but an illusion?

this film is worth watching just to laugh at the animated people and the social scenes which are depict... also don't forget the 'female apple' voice-over... classic!
Inspiration - a r c h i t e c t u r a l c o m p o n e n t
this is what has been lost with the controlling law and framework of building codes and standards... granted there must be levels of safety, but one must consider to what extent has architecture lost its ability to create when it is governed by laws which seek to enforce the norm or to create a 'standard'...
Inspiration - c o n c e p t u a l f i l m s
i must learn to take this medium of communication and use it to engulf the senses, such that paper architectural space can be experienced despite it's immateriality. Can it be architecture, if it has no material... or is there 'space' for architecture to simple exist in the minds eye... ultimately this is where all perception occurs anyone despite its 'reality' outside of ones self...

Conceptual Film - P i l g r i m a g e
Following is the conceptual film created as an exploration of the notions of pilgrimage in relation to architecture and urbanism.

Religious pilgrimage has defined the identity of cities throughout history and shaped the architecture and life of the city. Drawing upon these precedents the project serves to tie the City of Newcastle to the religious fabric intertwined throughout the world.
Newcastle is a city plagued by generic architectural developments, which fail to address the fundamental issue of the city’s identity. Leaving Newcastle imprisoned between its industrial past and its post-industrial future. The project explores the city’s religious foundations, an identity that has long been forgotten. A new urban fabric is weaved into the city, forming a spiritual infrastructure, a pilgrimage path and framework for the spiritual transformation of the urban pilgrim.
Pilgrimage is a process of revealing and discovery – “there are destinations, but only as points along a line of movement made necessary by” ones desire to see spiritual metamorphosis. It is the accumulation of experiences, moments and encounters which bring about the spiritual change. The journey is not linear but it does follow a path to a final destination.
Each pilgrim will have unique experiences leading to a unique transformation, but each is a united by the truth that they are a living temple for the spirit of God. No longer does God dwell in temples made by human hands, but in the hearts of His people. The architecture framing the pilgrimage does not contain God, but rather becomes the dwelling place for the vessels carrying His presence. The architecture is empowered and made sacred because it is dwelled in.
The project becomes the framework for the final destination of the pilgrimage; it becomes the womb or cocoon in which the final metamorphosis takes place.
Finished University
So I have finished my masters in architecture - only the exhibitions and a few non-university presentations and I can move on...
